Concebido en menor escala que el precedente Privateering, el álbum doble que Knopfler editara en 2012, Tracker es aún más sutil y sosegado que el de sus producciones más recientes. Knopfler no se refugia en el pasado pero a menudo lo contempla de manera taciturna o resignada, regresando continuamente a sus estilos y géneros musicales favoritos, que van desde el pub rock hasta la música folclórica británica y el country norteamericano.
