El segundo disco de Pink Floyd tras la marcha de Roger Waters suena menos forzado y más como un auténtico trabajo de grupo que A Momentary Lapse of Reason. En este disco, el teclista Rick Wright recupera su posición como miembro de la banda de pleno derecho. Algunas de las letras de David Gilmour podrían ir dirigidas a Waters, y hay un cierto tono acusatorio en vengativo en canciones como "What Do You Want from Me" y "Poles Apart". El eje conductor del disco, desde el título del disco hasta los gráficos, pasando por los pronombres "I-you" (yo-tú) de la mayor parte de las letras, tiene que ver con dicotomías y diferenciaciones, en las que "yo" es siempre quien domina.
