Sus fans han estado esperando un nuevo álbum suyo durante siete años, pero Woodkid no es un artista apresurado. El músico/director/grafista cosechó los frutos de su primer LP The Golden Age con toda tranquilidad, creando un vídeoclip para Rihanna, una banda sonora para una película (Desierto de Jonas Cuaron, hijo de Alfonso), produjo a otros artistas (el álbum Mykki de Mykki Blanco), o la música que acompañó los desfiles de moda de la casa Vuitton. También cuestionó “las responsabilidades colectivas e individuales del mundo de la creación ante un planeta al borde de la catástrofe”, lo que le condujo a este segundo LP, S16, tan solemne que lo ha comparado con un “thriller de ciencia ficción”. Lo primero que llama la atención es la voz de Woodkid. Tras trabajar con un coach vocal a diario, ha ganado en altura y profundidad, como en el melancólico Shift, compuesto en el período posterior a los ataques de 2015 en París, o en Horizons Into Battlegrounds, en el que el artista francés muestra acentos a lo Nick Cave. La instrumentación de S16 se divide entre una orquesta sinfónica (pero “menos enfática y menos hollywoodiense”, dice el artista) y software de MAO, lírico en el Reactor, metálico en Highway 27, y grandioso en el single Goliath, la pista más emblemática del disco. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
