2022 was a year of rebirth for Horace Andy, who, under the guidance of English dub guru Adrian Sherwood, has released two of the best albums of his career. Midnight Rockers was released in the spring, followed by the ‘sound system’ version, Midnight Scorchers, in the autumn. This collaboration with the label On-U Sound was long-awaited by Sherwood, who’s always ready to grab reggae legends by the scruff of the neck. Nothing but pure pleasure comes from these sessions, in which Horace Andy covers his greatest tracks (‘Rock to Sleep’, ‘Mr. Bassie’, ‘Safe From Harm’–his hit composed with Massive Attack–and ‘Fever’) in versions remixed by Sherwood. The ‘sound system’ album, on the other hand, involves two big Jamaican toast names: Daddy Freddy and Lone Ranger. The two records are reunited here in a deluxe version with two bonus tracks, namely ‘My Guiding Star’—one of his first hits recorded in 1973 for the legendary Jamaican producer Bunny Lee—and an instrumental version of ‘Careful’. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
