Probablemente muchos recuerden la primera vez que escucharon 'Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites'..... O la odiaron, o se les dibujó una sonrisa de satisfacción en la cara mientras pensaban "¿qué es esto?". ¿Cómo era posible crear algo tan horrible sonoramente y tan pegadizo al mismo tiempo?
En Quest for Fire, las raíces brostep de Skrillex nunca están demasiado lejos, con pequeños guiños a su origen repartidos por todo el álbum, pero con un grupo de veinticinco invitados eclécticos en quince temas, Skrillex está aquí para demostrar que no es solo un pionero del género dubstep, sino un revolucionario de la música electrónica. Desde colaboraciones con la leyenda de la IDM FourTet, la diosa del rap Missy Elliot, Dylan Brady del grupo hiperpop 100 Gecs, la cantante palestina Nai Barghouti, el DJ británico Fred... y con Flowdan, este segundo álbum es una absoluta mezcla de productos. ¿Hay una pauta general en el tracklist? No. ¿Hace falta? En absoluto.
El tema de apertura, "Leave Me Like This", es una buena muestra de lo que se puede esperar, o no, de los quince temas siguientes. Sin embargo, el tema que emocionará a los oyentes es 'RATATA' con Missy Elliot, una electrónica saltarina que conduce directamente a la oscura y discordante 'Tears' con el productor Joker. Moore parece encadenar ideas musicales inconexas a lo largo de las pistas, lo que da lugar a una experiencia auditiva incoherente que te cortará la respiración. No hay forma de relajarse en Quest for Fire.
Si entráis normalmente en Internet, habréis visto cómo Fred again… y Skrillex arrasaron en el mundo de la EDM con su tema "Rumble", en el que participó Flowdan. Un tema sucio, inspirado en el grime, que vuelve a contar con el característico ritmo de batería de Fred. Le sigue "Butterflies", un tema más suave de inspiración house con FourTet.
Sinceramente, algunos temas parecen de relleno cuando se yuxtaponen a los grandes éxitos, como el increíble "XENA", donde nos deleitan con la etérea voz de la cantante palestina Nai Barghouti antes de que el tema se convierta en un estruendoso ejercicio de techno tocado por baterías metálicas. ¿Quién habría esperado un tema así? Hablando de inesperado, el tema de Chicago "Too Bizarre (Juked)" fusiona EDM, grunge y screamo, con Swae Lee y un verso screamo de alta velocidad de Siiickbrain.
La energía empieza a decaer a medida que nos acercamos a los últimos cinco temas... ha habido tantos cambios de género y retrocesos que los oyentes probablemente sufrirán un latigazo cervical en este punto. Entre las últimas pistas, Moore incluye un divertido pero aparentemente inútil interludio de su entrevista con Pete Wentz de Fall Out Boy, en los días en que Moore estaba en la banda de post-hardcore From First To Last ('Warped Tour '05 with pete WENTZ'). El penúltimo tema, "Hazel Theme", se abre con "Almost there guys, sorry; one more minute of this", como si Skrillex se disculpara por la montaña rusa absoluta que acabamos de presenciar. El único tema en solitario del álbum, "Hazel Theme", intenta encontrar un momento de alivio antes de desembocar directamente en "Still Here (with the ones that I came with)" con Porter Robinson. A pesar de que el álbum suena por todas partes, tal vez la forma en que Skrillex mezcló el álbum en su set de DJ en el sótano sea la mejor manera de experimentarlo...Afrontémoslo: Skrillex sigue aquí, siempre ha estado aquí, y Quest for Fire es la prueba de que no va a ir a ninguna parte. No se puede hablar de un regreso si nunca se ha ido....
P.D.: Si Skrillex no es bastabte para ti, un día después del lanzamiento del álbum, Moore también lanzó Don't Get Too Close, la continuación de Quest for Fire.
