Shania Twain's sixth album has a retro vibe, but it's not a callback to 1995's breakthrough The Woman In Me or 1997's massive Come On Over (America's best-selling album by a female artist). Instead, Queen of Me feels like it could've been lifted from a time capsule deposited in the mid-aughts—the era when Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavgine and Fergie were on the charts. It's there in the extra-sassy doo-wop and rubber-band bass of "Pretty Liar" ("I can see your pants are on fire/ You're such a fucking liar"), the sweeping mid-tempo girl-power ballad "Brand New" and the poppy island breeze of "Best Friend." You wouldn't be crazy to wonder if "Inhale/Exhale Air" and "The Hardest Stone" (which also features a wonderful, quick Bee Gees interlude) are Natasha Bedingfield covers. And there's even something very Panic at the Disco-esque (circa Pretty. Odd.) about the big and irresistible title track, a female-empowerment dance anthem that also nods, appropriately, to Queen with the high drama vocals and glissandos. "I'm a queen/ No, I don't need a king/ So keep the ring," Twain sings. "I've got a life and so many other amazing things/ To do like getting out and following my dreams." It's surprisingly endearing to imagine a dream that Twain, now an age-defying 57, hasn't seen come true. Elsewhere, the lyrics tend to be full of clichés, but who turns to Shania Twain for thought-provoking poetry? As always, she's all about titles that can be yelled, hands in the air, hips shaking. "Giddy Up!" hits the mark, big time, with some big disco flash and a tongue twister: "Drunk in the city, got a litty in the cup/ Up in your giddy up!/ When we get stuck, gotta get a little love/ It's up in your giddy, giddy up!" Boosted by a "Footloose" beat, "Waking Up Dreaming" deserves the scream-along treatment too, although there's something oddly metallic about the vocal effects (ditto the Sgt. Pepper-ish "Last Day of Summer"). "Number One" is slinky contemporary dance-floor, while "Not Just a Girl" offers the only country twang to be found.
