The film Minamata recalls a period in the life of American photojournalist William Eugene Smith (played by an unrecognisable Johnny Depp): in the 1970s, armed with his Minolta camera, he witnessed the consequences of industrial pollution on the inhabitants of Minamata, a small coastal town in Japan. He fell victim to a revenge attack and had to be urgently repatriated to the USA. This subject allows Smith to show two opposing sides of human nature: the resilience of a population suffering from 'Minamata Disease', and the effects of the criminal behaviour of unscrupulous industrialists. It is precisely this duality that Ryuichi Sakamoto (Furyo, The Last Emperor, Stilettos... ) sought to communicate in the soundtrack he wrote for Andrew Levitas's film. After a main theme that evokes Erik Satie's pure piano and melancholic harmonies, the Japanese composer (who is also an environmental activist) created a score that combined darkness and serenity in a single movement. This approach, of dancing on a razor's edge, can be found in sublime tracks such as Offer (whose strings swing between horror and sweetness) or Into Japan (where a fragile accordion collides with enigmatic strings). The production of this soundtrack is true to Sakamoto's style: his commitment to crafting ultra-sophisticated sonic textures, halfway between the acoustic and electronic, seems to grow with each of his projects (solo albums and soundtracks). The album concludes with the bright voice of Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, who is also one of the actors in the film (One Single Voice). © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
