Dirigida por el muniqués Frank Strobel (que ha supervisado igualmente las mezclas), la regrabación de la banda sonora original de Metropolis se ha llevado a cabo con motivo de la restauración de este clásico silente de Fritz Lang, a los 83 años de su estreno. En 1927 Gottfried Huppertz (1887-1937) era ya un veterano compositor cinematográfico. A él se debe especialmente la partitura de Los nibelungos (1924), también de Fritz Lang. Con Metropolis contribuiría a ennoblecer la música de films, «género» todavía balbuciente por entonces. Además de la precisión de la partitura en relación con las imágenes que nos muestran esa magnífica ciudad futurista, se descubren numerosos elementos que pasarían a conformar la gramática musical cinematográfica, tanto en Alemania como en Hollywood. De entrada hay que decir que está escrita en lenguaje tonal, con aliento épico y neorromántico; por lo demás, incluye numerosos motivos descriptivos tanto de los personajes como de los temas del film (amor, rebelión, etc.); y por último, pese al clasicismo predominante, la partitura de Huppertz participa del clima renovador de su época, apelando a armonías jazzísticas y a ritmos sincopados.
