Hace casi dos décadas que Dan y Pat vienen predicando a quien quiera escucharles el manual de uso del rock’n’roll. Y eso a cualquiera con buen gusto. Diez años después de haber dejado Akron, en su Ohio natal, para trasladarse a Nashville, The Black Keys sacan Let’s Rock, que en cierto modo supone su retorno a las fuentes de un rock original, por cuyas cuyas venas corre un blues espeso y en constante ebullición. Lo que implica, claro está, que la guitarra eléctrica se sitúe en primer plano desde el minuto uno. Por eso puede decirse que el título del álbum no se aparta ni un ápice de la verdad… Tienen mucho por decir aún, claro está, aunque para ello deban hacerlo, a veces, cada uno por su lado. Dan Auerbach ha creado el sello Easy Eye Sound, a partir del nombre de su estudio en Nashville, donde ha lanzado su segundo trabajo en solitario, Waiting on a Song, produciendo al mismo tiempo una serie de álbumes firmados por Yola, Shannon & The Clams, Dee White, Sonny Smith, Robert Finley o The Gibson Brothers. Por su parte, Pat Carney ha producido y grabado composiciones de Calvin Johnson, Michelle Branch, Tobias Jesso Jr., Jessy Wilson, Tennis, Repeat Repeat, Wild Belle, Sad Planets o Turbo Fruits, entre otros. Y eso por no hablar de la banda sonora de BoJack Horseman, por encargo de Netflix. Pero tales infidelidades ha intensificado su deseo de volver a trabajar juntos. «Este periodo me ha hecho ver las cosas con más claridad», precisa Auerbach. «Y gracias a esta larga separación, el reencuentro con Pat ha resultado todavía más agradable. Este disco funciona como documento de esas sensaciones.»
Sea como fuere, Let’s Rock pasa revista a los mejores y más pesadas guitarras de los 70, veneradas por el tándem. De esta forma el abanico estilístico abarca desde Glenn Schwartz, Joe Walsh o James Gang a Billy Gibbons de ZZ Top, pasando por Stealers Wheel (Sit Around and Miss You se parece enormemente a Stuck in the Middle With You), T. Rex, Link Wray (periodo Polydor), Blue Öyster Cult y muchos más. «No quería que hubiera demasiada reflexión», añade Auerbach. «Era preciso destacar esa espontaneidad. Quería grabar algo similar a Louie Louie y que quedara bien. Es decir, ¡quería sonar como The Troggs!» «Por mi parte, el modelo a seguir era Down on the Street de The Stooges», señala Carney, que insiste en su amor por las «buenas canciones hard que apenas lo parecen». «¡Esas son mis favoritas! Y en este álbum, Dan y yo hemos logrado lo que pretendíamos. Hacía un año que me dedicaba a tocar la eléctrica en mi estudio, y por primera vez desde hacía tiempo, él también estaba tocando mucho.
