The Need of Love opens with pounding underarm drums, an imprint of Africa cleverly placed here as if to remind us that so many genres of music (soul, jazz, rock and everything in between) owe their success to the ancestral rhythms of this continent. Across this global heritage, Lisa Simone also evokes her own past as well as that of her mother’s, the legendary Nina Simone. During her tumultuous life, her mother fought not only to be recognised for her own talent, but also led considerable fights during the civil rights movement, as well as battling some inner demons. An interesting but difficult legacy which Lisa Simone firsty avoided.
She joined the US Air Force in the 90s, but was eventually drawn back to music, so much of which runs through her veins. She has now faced her past and touches on her renowned mother on Libations, Ghost, Tonight and Legacy (on this one, she expresses her honour and joy of having such a unique heritage). Composed with the Senegalese guitarist Hervé Samb, and produced by the drummer Régis Ceccarelli (Chats Sauvages, Dee Dee Bridgewater), these songs are all of a great variety: Motown-style pop on The Reckoning or Touchy Subjects, funky jazz for Wonderful and Secret & Lies, a suave ballad on The Need of Love and gospel soul for the single Right Now. The Need of Love is a hand-crafted piece of art made for a voice in direct contact with the heart and soul, a platform for a voice which exudes pure, elegant talent. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
