The Cold Stares

A blues-rock outfit from Indiana, the Cold Stares play music with a tough, rootsy feel that honors the heritage of the music while adding a muscular, hard-hitting approach that's full of swagger and passion. The Cold Stares started as a two-man guitar and drums duo, and showed that big sounds could come from a small lineup on albums like 2017's Head Bent and 2018's Mountain. The Cold Stares started reaching larger audiences with the beefed-up sound of 2021's Heavy Shoes, and after expanding to a trio with the addition of a bassist, 2023's Voices showed they could rock hard and still leave room for their introspective side. Guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter Chris Tapp grew up in Madisonville, KY, where his father sold auto parts and his deeply religious mother took him to frequent church services and confiscated his Black Sabbath and Kiss records. (Tapp would later discover he was adopted, and as an adult he would belatedly get to know his birth mother.) While he maintained an abiding faith, he became disenchanted with what he saw as the hypocrisy of the church, and he found himself attracted to the storytelling of blues artists such as Son House and Robert Johnson, who dealt with the struggle between faith and temptation in their songs. Tapp took up the guitar and became proficient in blues and hard rock styles, and not long after he graduated from high school, he was working with a band that needed a drummer. Brian Mullins, also from the Madisonville area, landed the gig, and after the band broke up, the two stayed in touch. While Tapp would go to college and get a degree in history, he kept playing music, and in 2008, he wanted to form a band that reflected his musical and personal passions. When he found himself playing in a short-time project with Mullins, he decided his old friend would be just the right drummer for his new songs. As they started working up material, rather than looking for a bassist, Tapp tweaked his sound to add extra bottom end, and in 2010 the Cold Stares recorded their first demo and began playing out. The duo was beginning to make a name for themselves when, in 2012, Tapp was diagnosed with cancer, and he was initially told he had only six months to live. That diagnosis proved to be incorrect, and with a new lease on life and no fear about what the future could hold, Tapp and Mullins rededicated themselves to the band. Making Evansville, IN their base of operations, the Cold Stares recorded their debut album, 2013's A Cold Wet Night And A Howling Wind, which they released themselves. Thanks to good press, word of mouth, and plenty of live work, A Cold Wet Night found an audience, selling 25,000 copies, and they teamed with Small Stone Records to release their second LP, 2017's Head Bent. The band developed a reputation as a strong live act and toured hard, sharing bills with a wide variety of acts, including Joe Bonamassa, Rival Sons, Reignwolf, Spoon, and Grand Funk Railroad. Their third album, Mountain, arrived in 2018, and they headed to Memphis, TN to record 2019's Ways at the legendary Sam Phillips Recording Studio. After releasing most of their music on their own, the Cold Stares signed with the Dutch label Mascot Records, whose roster was dominated by guitar-based rock, blues, and roots music acts. Tapp and Mullins returned to Memphis to record their first LP for Mascot, the self-produced Heavy Shoes. With the band unable to perform live due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they postponed the release of the LP until they could support it, as Tapp devoted his downtime to writing songs. Heavy Shoes was issued in 2021, and the band were able to return to their lively tour schedule. In 2022, the duo became a trio when bassist Bryce Klueh became part of the group, and they returned to the studio with producer Mark Needham (who previously worked with Taj Mahal, Fleetwood Mac, and Imagine Dragons) in tow. With a set list drawn from the material Tapp penned during lockdown, most of 2023's Voices was recorded in just two days, but the band were pleased with the results, describing it as their most nuanced and adventurous album to date.
