Debby Friday

Debby Friday's brash, commanding music is an electrifying mixture of synth punk, industrial hip-hop, deconstructed club, and left-field pop. Following two EPs and several singles, the Canada-based producer, songwriter, and filmmaker released her Polaris-winning debut album, Good Luck, on Sub Pop in 2023. Debby Friday was born in Nigeria and moved to Canada with her Yoruba mother when she was two. After she graduated high school, she became a DJ and began spinning at parties and raves throughout North America. This lasted for less than a year, however, and due to various personal issues, she stopped DJ'ing and began learning how to produce. She released a few tracks and the experimental project Terror: A Mix/Tape before putting out her debut EP, Bitchpunk, and moving from Montreal to Vancouver in 2018. She connected with other boundary-pushing artists online and released collaborations with Bonaventure and DJ Haram, then produced the EP Death Drive, which was released by Deathbomb Arc in 2019. Friday created, starred in, and wrote the original score for the short film Bare Bones in 2020. In 2021, she released the songs "Runnin" and "Focus," and appeared on the expanded edition of clipping.'s Wriggle. She also premiered the 42-minute audio play Link Sick, created as her Master of Fine Arts graduate thesis project. Two audio-visual plays, Vow and V for Virtual, completed the sci-fi trilogy. After moving to Toronto, Debby Friday announced her signing to Sub Pop with the release of the ecstatic pop single "So Hard to Tell" in early 2023. Her first album, Good Luck, arrived the following March, with Chriss Vargas (Pelada, Uñas) guesting on the song "I Got It." Good Luck was awarded the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.
