Hang Cool Teddy Bear puede no ser una secuela explícita de Bat Out of Hell pero tiene suficiente ampulosidad para hacer que alguien crea que es el cuarto volumen de Bat. No lo es, claro: a diferencia de esos tres discos que definen su carrera, Hang Cool Teddy Bear dispone de una narrativa real (una historia confusa e inconcreta de un soldado herido) en lugar de ser meramente conceptual, una diferencia que debería dar forma al álbum, especialmente cuando va de la mano de la producción fresca y brillante de Rob Cavallo. Cavallo corrige todos los errores del metal de mano dura de Bat Out of Hell III -su monotonía insustancial que suena como un artefacto desafortunado del Sunset Strip de los 80 con espuma y crepados- pero al álbum le siguen faltando las canciones de Steinman.
