Si algo no puede reprochársele a Brad Mehldau es que se duerma en los laureles o que guste de instalarse en su zona de confort. Y es que con Finding Gabriel, el pianista norteamericano firma un álbum tan ambicioso como proteiforme con el que dinamita las habituales fronteras jazzísticas. Es cierto que existía un precedente, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, ese ovni editado en 2014 junto al batería Mark Guiliana, del cual el que nos ocupa supone una suerte de prolongación en clave más intensa. Por otra parte, Finding Gabriel es en gran medida resultado de sus continuas relecturas de la Biblia; de ahí ese arcángel Gabriel al que se refiere el título… «He compuesto muchas de las piezas recurriendo a los sintetizadores, con Mark Guiliana a la batería, siguiendo un proceso similar al de Taming the Dragon. Después he añadido más capas, haciendo de la voz humana un elemento importante al margen de las letras, en tanto que expresión armónica pura y fuente de emociones.»
Desconcertante en una primera escucha, este disco de reverberaciones místicas acaba revelándose fascinante y, sobre todo, desbordante de ideas. Responsabilizándose del piano, los sintes (entre ellos, un Dave Smith / Tom Oberheim OB-6), el Fender Rhodes, las percusiones y –¡por vez primera! – de las partes vocales, Mehldau ha construido una sinfonía para metales, cuerdas y electrónica que flirtea con el jazz-fusion (evocando a veces al Pat Metheny Group o a Weather Report) y concede a la voz humana un papel fundamental. Pero el pianista norteamericano no es, con todo, el único vocalista, puesto que han aceptado el envite cantantes como Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens o Gabriel Kahane. Sin olvidar a otros invitados, como la violinista Sara Caswell, el trompetista Ambrose Akinmusire, los saxofonistas Joel Frahm, Charles Pillow y Chris Cheek o el flautista Michael Thomas.
