Although he started his career in fado houses and won over the hearts of fans of the genre, António Zambujo has never taken an orthodox approach to the Portuguese song. He has often imbued his music with elements from other traditions, has never hidden his passion for bossa nova or MPB (música popular brasileira) and has paid homage to the songs of Chico Buarque on his previous album Até Pensei Que Fosse Minha.
Nowadays he is one of the biggest singers in his country and has become an international point of reference, so he can afford to look at the bigger picture. Without turning his back on his admirably intimate side, he joins forces with the Sinfonietta de Lisboa symphony orchestra for five tracks, uses a Hammond organ, a marimba, electric guitars and a trumpet to evoke the innocence of the 60s on Nao Interessa Nada and produces vocal arrangements that are worthy of Sgt. Pepper era Beatles on Sem Palavras. Banjo, clarinet and trumpet transport us back to a Roaring Twenties charleston on Multimilionário whereas Catavento da Sé, with its bass played by Ricardo Cruz makes you think of the sandstorms and dry grass of spaghetti westerns.
With Zambujo are a diverse range of collaborators, made of composers/writers (Luisa Sobral, Márcia, Paulo Abreu Lima…) and arrangers (Filipe Melo, Nuno Rafael) that are among the best of their country. He has also recruited the Uruguayan Jorge Drexler (Madera de Deriva), Brazilians Rodrigo Maranhão (Do Avesso), Arnaldo Antunes (Até o Fim) and Milton Nascimento, whose classic Fruta Boa he revisits. He also put his own pen to paper and lets his own chords speak for themselves on a handful of songs.
In the heart of the city, facing the pit of the orchestra, in a saloon, a Prohibition era club or one in Swinging London, his velvety vocals land on the listener’s eardrums with as much tenderness as he was able to produce in the hot, confined spaces of the casas de fado from the beginnings of his career. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz

Although he started his career in fado houses and won over the hearts of fans of the genre, António Zambujo has never taken an orthodox approach to the Portuguese song. He has often imbued his music with elements from other traditions, has never hidden his passion for bossa nova or MPB (música popular brasileira) and has paid homage to the songs of Chico Buarque on his previous album Até Pensei Que Fosse Minha.
Nowadays he is one of the biggest singers in his country and has become an international point of reference, so he can afford to look at the bigger picture. Without turning his back on his admirably intimate side, he joins forces with the Sinfonietta de Lisboa symphony orchestra for five tracks, uses a Hammond organ, a marimba, electric guitars and a trumpet to evoke the innocence of the 60s on Nao Interessa Nada and produces vocal arrangements that are worthy of Sgt. Pepper era Beatles on Sem Palavras. Banjo, clarinet and trumpet transport us back to a Roaring Twenties charleston on Multimilionário whereas Catavento da Sé, with its bass played by Ricardo Cruz makes you think of the sandstorms and dry grass of spaghetti westerns.
With Zambujo are a diverse range of collaborators, made of composers/writers (Luisa Sobral, Márcia, Paulo Abreu Lima…) and arrangers (Filipe Melo, Nuno Rafael) that are among the best of their country. He has also recruited the Uruguayan Jorge Drexler (Madera de Deriva), Brazilians Rodrigo Maranhão (Do Avesso), Arnaldo Antunes (Até o Fim) and Milton Nascimento, whose classic Fruta Boa he revisits. He also put his own pen to paper and lets his own chords speak for themselves on a handful of songs.
In the heart of the city, facing the pit of the orchestra, in a saloon, a Prohibition era club or one in Swinging London, his velvety vocals land on the listener’s eardrums with as much tenderness as he was able to produce in the hot, confined spaces of the casas de fado from the beginnings of his career. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
