La historia de este álbum comienza en 1956, cuando el músico cubano Dámaso Pérez Prado, llamado con toda justicia “El Rey del Mambo”, visitó Nueva York con su fastuosa orquesta especializada en ese ritmo que acaparaba la atención mundial. El mambo era una auténtica locura por su compás frenético que ponía a todos a bailar. La Segunda Guerra Mundial había acabado y la sociedad estaba hasta la coronilla de muertes y batallas. Había una necesidad evidente de baile y desahogo en todas partes, y esta música tan contagiosa parecía perfecta para lograr tal efecto.
Hasta las grandes orquestas americanas de jazz incluyeron el novedoso ritmo en sus shows, en tanto que las bandas latinas dejaron todo a un lado para especializarse en la interpretación de mambo. Un club en Nueva York, el Palladium, se convirtió en la meca del ritmo, donde bailarines acrobáticos centraban la atención del público, y donde las estrellas del cine, el deporte y la High Society aparecían cada noche para darle glamour. Las orquestas residentes del Palladium eran la de Machito y sus Afrocubans, la de Tito Rodríguez y la de Tito Puente.
Pero entonces, con la llegada de Pérez Prado, el diario La Prensa organizó una peculiar batalla de bandas que enfrentó a éste con Tito Puente en el Manhattan Center, y esa noche, sin atenuantes ante un público enteramente latino, Puente ganó y fue coronado como “El Rey de la Música Latina”. Apoyado en ese éxito, Puente, quien tenía un contrato con la RCA Victor, grabó dos álbumes en 1956: Cuban Carnival y Puente Goes Jazz, y al año siguiente otros dos: Top Percussion y Dance Manía.
El disco se grabó a finales de 1957 y salió al mercado en 1958, convirtiéndose de inmediato en el álbum más vendido del mercado hispano. La mayoría de composiciones y todos los arreglos fueron de Tito Puente, quien tocó los timbales y el vibráfono. Pero quien sugirió el repertorio fue el cantante principal de la orquesta, el puertorriqueño Santos Colón. Ese repertorio incluía las canciones El Cayuco, Complicación, 3-D Mambo, Llegó Miján, Cuando te vea, Hong Kong Mambo, Mambo Gozón, Mi chiquita quiere Bembé, Varsity Drag, Estoy siempre junto a ti, Agua limpia todo y Saca tu mujer.
El hit radial fue El Cayuco, pero todos los números de aquella grabación tuvieron difusión gradual y fueron reeditados en diferentes recopilatorios durante años. Varias generaciones de latinos se criaron escuchando aquellas melodías y El Cayuco acabaría siendo un estándar en la música chicana con sucesivas versiones de diferentes bandas de rock latino.
Hay quien cree que el éxito de Dance Manía estuvo basado en la percusión de la orquesta de Puente, siempre intensa y fuerte. La sección de percusión estaba conformada por Ray Coen en el piano, Bobby Rodríguez en el bajo, Tito Puente en los timbales, Ray Barretto en las congas, Ray Rodríguez en los bongós y Julio Collazo en la percusión menor (güiro, maracas y claves).
Pero como lo afirmaron Domingo Echevarría y Harry Sepúlveda en la reedición del álbum en 1991, Dance Manía “es un paraíso para los bailarines, una cosecha de música colorida y rítmica, tocada por una de las mejores orquestas de música bailable latina y afrocubana del mundo”.
En 2002 Dance Manía fue incluida en el National Registry de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos como uno de los álbumes más representativos de la música hispana de todos los tiempos. © José Arteaga/Gladys Palmera

Descripción del álbum

La historia de este álbum comienza en 1956, cuando el músico cubano Dámaso Pérez Prado, llamado con toda justicia “El Rey del Mambo”, visitó Nueva York con su fastuosa orquesta especializada en ese ritmo que acaparaba la atención mundial. El mambo era una auténtica locura por su compás frenético que ponía a todos a bailar. La Segunda Guerra Mundial había acabado y la sociedad estaba hasta la coronilla de muertes y batallas. Había una necesidad evidente de baile y desahogo en todas partes, y esta música tan contagiosa parecía perfecta para lograr tal efecto.
Hasta las grandes orquestas americanas de jazz incluyeron el novedoso ritmo en sus shows, en tanto que las bandas latinas dejaron todo a un lado para especializarse en la interpretación de mambo. Un club en Nueva York, el Palladium, se convirtió en la meca del ritmo, donde bailarines acrobáticos centraban la atención del público, y donde las estrellas del cine, el deporte y la High Society aparecían cada noche para darle glamour. Las orquestas residentes del Palladium eran la de Machito y sus Afrocubans, la de Tito Rodríguez y la de Tito Puente.
Pero entonces, con la llegada de Pérez Prado, el diario La Prensa organizó una peculiar batalla de bandas que enfrentó a éste con Tito Puente en el Manhattan Center, y esa noche, sin atenuantes ante un público enteramente latino, Puente ganó y fue coronado como “El Rey de la Música Latina”. Apoyado en ese éxito, Puente, quien tenía un contrato con la RCA Victor, grabó dos álbumes en 1956: Cuban Carnival y Puente Goes Jazz, y al año siguiente otros dos: Top Percussion y Dance Manía.
El disco se grabó a finales de 1957 y salió al mercado en 1958, convirtiéndose de inmediato en el álbum más vendido del mercado hispano. La mayoría de composiciones y todos los arreglos fueron de Tito Puente, quien tocó los timbales y el vibráfono. Pero quien sugirió el repertorio fue el cantante principal de la orquesta, el puertorriqueño Santos Colón. Ese repertorio incluía las canciones El Cayuco, Complicación, 3-D Mambo, Llegó Miján, Cuando te vea, Hong Kong Mambo, Mambo Gozón, Mi chiquita quiere Bembé, Varsity Drag, Estoy siempre junto a ti, Agua limpia todo y Saca tu mujer.
El hit radial fue El Cayuco, pero todos los números de aquella grabación tuvieron difusión gradual y fueron reeditados en diferentes recopilatorios durante años. Varias generaciones de latinos se criaron escuchando aquellas melodías y El Cayuco acabaría siendo un estándar en la música chicana con sucesivas versiones de diferentes bandas de rock latino.
Hay quien cree que el éxito de Dance Manía estuvo basado en la percusión de la orquesta de Puente, siempre intensa y fuerte. La sección de percusión estaba conformada por Ray Coen en el piano, Bobby Rodríguez en el bajo, Tito Puente en los timbales, Ray Barretto en las congas, Ray Rodríguez en los bongós y Julio Collazo en la percusión menor (güiro, maracas y claves).
Pero como lo afirmaron Domingo Echevarría y Harry Sepúlveda en la reedición del álbum en 1991, Dance Manía “es un paraíso para los bailarines, una cosecha de música colorida y rítmica, tocada por una de las mejores orquestas de música bailable latina y afrocubana del mundo”.
En 2002 Dance Manía fue incluida en el National Registry de la Biblioteca del Congreso de Estados Unidos como uno de los álbumes más representativos de la música hispana de todos los tiempos. © José Arteaga/Gladys Palmera
