Bahari
California outfit Bahari's shimmery, harmonic pop combines folk, AM pop, pulsing EDM, and yearning R&B into a distinctively kaleidoscopic sound. The band's 2016 debut EP, Dancing on the Sun, traded in sultry, beachy songs informed by decades' worth of pop history, while singles like 2018's breakthrough "Savage" delivered sharp-edged electro pop. Bahari's range continued to grow with the heartfelt ballads of 2021's Forget You EP and the dreamy reflections of 2023's "Kills Me."
Formed in Los Angeles in 2014, Bahari initially featured three singer/songwriters, the Kenya-raised keyboardist Ruby Carr, Nashville-born bassist Natalia Panzarella, and California-bred guitarist Sidney Sartini. Friends since their teens, they began writing songs together, drawing inspiration from classic groups including Fleetwood Mac and Bob Dylan, as well as contemporary artists like Christina Aguilera and Destiny's Child. They arrived on the scene in late 2014 with the release of their folk-tinged debut single, "Wild Ones." They were also featured vocalists on the single "Addicted to a Memory" from Zedd's 2015 hit album True Colors. Demonstrating influences from the breadth of AM pop and girl groups, the band's debut EP, Dancing on the Sun, arrived in May 2016 on Interscope Records. The next year brought a handful of singles from Bahari, including covers of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" and the Youngbloods' "Get Together." Around that time, they parted ways with Interscope, self-releasing 2018's "Fucked Up" and "Savage," which offered a more pop-oriented electronic approach that racked up tens of millions of streams. Before the end of the year, Sartini left the group, and Carr and Panzarella went forward as a duo.
A collaborative single with Sultan + Shepard and Rock Mafia, "Miles to Your Heart," arrived on 12TONE/WEA in mid-2019, the same year Bahari released their own "Gameboy." They also contributed to Illenium's "Crashing," as part of the soundtrack to the film To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. A tour with Elohim followed in early 2020, and the two-piece Bahari signed with Epic Records mid-year, debuting on the label with a remix of "Savage" featuring Bia. The duo returned with more singles, including "Waking Up Neighbors," "bipolar," and "Jackie Kennedy," all of which were included on their sophomore EP, 2021's Forget You. During the COVID-19 global pandemic, Carr and Panzarella moved to a Laurel Canyon home where they set up their own studio, allowing them to capture ideas for songs whenever they appeared. More stand-alone tracks followed, including 2022's "Hot Mess" (with Yoshi Flower) and "Destructive." Bahari kicked off a new creative phase with April 2023's languid single "Kills Me."
