After two brilliant albums, Street Worms (2018) and Welfare Jazz (2021), these Swedes continue making space for themselves in the crowded modern punk scene. Alongside Amyl & The Sniffers and Surfbort, the Viagra Boys embody colourful, tongue-in-cheek punk. Their absurd, denunciatory lyrics are a far cry from the bleakness so common in punk - a theme which can quickly get old. The sad loss of Benjamin Vallé, co-founder and former guitarist, hasn’t seemed to hinder their creativity. In fact, Sebastian Murphy’s band has delivered their best album to date this summer. The record is seemingly split in two by the crypto-synthetic track 'Globe Earth', and both sides succeed in creating a style of rock that is affordable without sounding cheap (e.g. 'The Cognitive Trade-Off Hypothesis'). The sextet, armed with its bouncing sax, excels in building a punk sound filled with nuance and surprises around every corner. There are some country digressions on 'Big Boy', a duet with Sleaford Mods’ Jason Williamson, as well as some unusual post-punk keyboards ('Cave World', 'Troglodytes'), hard-hitting, trashy spoken-word ('Ain’t No Thief') and New Order-style new wave ('ADD'). Perhaps most excitingly, there’s the incredible 'Baby Criminal' which features a banging bass/drums/sax combo which gets the album started at full speed. A great release. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
