Todo es falso, la belleza del arte en el artificio y la adoración en la cultura pop. Orville Peck apareció en 2019 como en un sueño inquieto: un espectral pero glamuroso vaquero queer, con el rostro oculto tras una máscara de flecos y haciendo poses a lo Elvis con trajes con aún más flecos. Un éxito instantáneo para los que les gusta tener la imagen sin el sonido. Pero con el sonido, también era bueno. Su primer álbum, Pony, sonaba como una recopilación de oscuras píldoras de country sin terruño, el patio de recreo de un niño de la new wave que descubre la voz de Roy Orbison y las guitarras del oeste. Una fantasía indie muy personal y conmovedora, transformada hoy con un segundo álbum con ambiciones mucho más amplias. De Pony a Bronco, Peck ha asumido un cambio de registro. Grabó estas nuevas canciones en Nashville, con muchos más músicos y recursos, y probablemente menos libertad. Se sumerge de cabeza en el recuerdo del country-pop de los años 60. Bastante irreconocible, su forma de cantar nos recuerda a Charlie Rich, Glen Campbell, Elvis o incluso a Roy Orbison. Al borde de una imitación enfática, poco salvaje para un vaquero, Orville Peck corre el riesgo de perder la franja indie de sus fans, que echarán de menos el encanto tembloroso y personal de su primer álbum. Sin embargo, el disco tiene buenos arreglos y es rico en melodías, se mantiene en el lado positivo de las cosas. Es fácil dejarse llevar por los sentimientos y amar estas canciones que evocan una época dorada americana y hacen que quieras sacar tus viejos discos de vinilo.
