La Chineke! Orchestra es una iniciativa del famoso bajista inglés de origen nigeriano e irlandés, Chi-Chi Nwanoku. La idea surgió durante una conversación con Ed Vaizey, el entonces Ministro de Cultura, a quien señaló que, a menudo, era una de las únicas personas negras en los escenarios de los conciertos sinfónicos. Así nació, en 2015, el concepto de la Chineke! Orchestra, que reúne a una mayoría de músicos negros, asiáticos y de otras minorías étnicas habitualmente excluidas de la escena clásica. Una orquesta militante que, después de grabar Dvorák, Sibelius y Rachmaninov en Signum Classics, se alía con... Tuff Gong, el sello fundado por Bob Marley, para un disco de versiones del icono jamaicano.
La génesis del proyecto se remonta a 2018, cuando el violonchelista Sheku Kanneh-Mason, miembro de los Chineke! y estrella en las redes sociales desde su concierto en la boda del príncipe Harry, versionó brillantemente No Woman No Cry en su álbum Inspiration. La familia Marley se conmovió y decidió seguir con el álbum Bob Marley & The Chineke! Orchestra, recientemente publicado y en el que el conjunto recrea y versiona diez de los clásicos de Marley. La Chineke! Orchestra es una iniciativa del famoso bajista inglés de origen nigeriano e irlandés, Chi-Chi Nwanoku. La idea surgió durante una conversación con Ed Vaizey, el entonces Ministro de Cultura, a quien señaló que, a menudo, era una de las únicas personas negras en los escenarios de los conciertos sinfónicos. Así nació, en 2015, el concepto de la Chineke! Orchestra, que reúne a una mayoría de músicos negros, asiáticos y de otras minorías étnicas habitualmente excluidas de la escena clásica. Una orquesta militante que, después de grabar Dvorák, Sibelius y Rachmaninov en Signum Classics, se alía con... Tuff Gong, el sello fundado por Bob Marley, para un disco de versiones del icono jamaicano.
La génesis del proyecto se remonta a 2018, cuando el violonchelista Sheku Kanneh-Mason, miembro de los Chineke! y estrella en las redes sociales desde su concierto en la boda del príncipe Harry, versionó brillantemente No Woman No Cry en su álbum Inspiration. La familia Marley se conmovió y decidió seguir con el álbum Bob Marley & The Chineke! Orchestra, recientemente publicado y en el que el conjunto recrea y versiona diez de los clásicos de Marley.
