No es extraño que Leonard Cohen siga siendo una inspiración para los artistas de hoy. Al bautizar este álbum como una canción del songwriter canadiense, Anthem, Madeleine Peyroux no oculta sus preferencias. Pero de este modo también ha querido alejarse un poco más del fantasma de Billie Holiday, con la que tantas veces es comparada… En cualquier caso, Madeline Peyroux no le debe nada a nadie. Estilo, timbre vocal, capacidad compositiva... su dominio de todas esas facetas resulta asombroso, sin más. En esta ocasión ha optado por no hacer versiones y ofrecernos nuevos temas escritos por ella o en comandita con Patrick Warren (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen), Brian MacLeod (Leonard Cohen, Tina Turner), David Baerwald (Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow) o el productor Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Herbie Hancock). Pero también están esas letras a menudo comprometidas, a las que suele asociar sonoridades delicadas cuando no abiertamente melancólicas. Todo aquí suena ingrávido. Los arreglos y la producción adoptan texturas sedosas, e incluso al cantar un emocionante poema de Paul Eluard, Liberté, Peyroux demuestra una sutileza que aporta aún más fuerza a los versos. Como es habitual, las fronteras entre jazz, pop, soul, blues y folk quedan felizmente difuminadas, si bien su arte brilla como nunca, informándonos que la suya es una de las voces más cautivadoras de su generación. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
