Anguish

A wildly experimental cross-genre supergroup, Anguish bring together heavy hitters from several circles of fringe music. As early as 2004, New Jersey-based avant-garde hip-hop group Dälek collaborated with Krautrock legends Faust on the album Derbe Respect, Alder. Many years later, Anguish expanded the creative possibilities by combining players from Faust and Dälek with members of Swedish free jazz collective Fire! Orchestra in a storm of noisy improvisation that resulted in Anguish's 2018 self-titled debut album. Anguish was formed by Hans-Joachim Irmler, keyboardist and founding member of Krautrock band Faust, Dälek members Mike Mare and Will Brooks, drummer Andreas Werliin, and saxophonist Mats Gustafsson. The quintet gathered in the summer of 2018 for a three-day recording session at Faust's Scheer Studios in Germany. The marathon session involved lots of improvisation and the various talents of each musician playing off the others; the results often meld political hip-hop manifestos, industrial-edged noise, and free jazz outbursts. The material is mixed and edited on this bleak, often dystopian debut album, which was released in December of 2018 on RareNoiseRecords.
