Sarah Jaffe
A versatile singer/songwriter whose career has traversed synth pop, indie rock, and chamber folk, Sarah Jaffe consistently brings both experimental ambition and a melodic pop sense to her work. Based in Denton, Texas, she first earned accolades for the stark folk-oriented style of her debut EP and subsequent 2010 full-length Suburban Nature. Her folk-pop song "Clementine" was used in the 2011 film Life Happens, after which Jaffe began to transition her sound toward an increasingly more experimental pop style with albums like 2012's The Body Wins and 2017's electronic-driven Bad Baby.
A native of Texas, Jaffe grew up outside of Dallas and spent a year in Los Angeles before settling in the vibrant musical hub of Denton, where she burst onto the city's indie scene during the late 2000s, making memorable live appearances at venues like the Austin City Limits festival and winning recognition in several categories at the Dallas Observer Music Awards. Raves for her initial EP, 2008's Even Born Again, in the American and U.K. press, as well as an international tour supporting the band Midlake raised the singer's profile even further and she signed a deal with Kirtland Records, which released the full-length Suburban Nature as her official debut in 2010. The home-recorded The Way Sound Leaves a Room EP arrived in 2011, while later that year, her song "Clementine" was featured prominently during the closing credits of the film Life Happens, further boosting her exposure.
Jaffe's sound began to shift toward experimental pop on 2012's evocative full-length The Body Wins and its electro-pop follow-up, Don't Disconnect, in 2014. A few months after the release of Don't Disconnect, she issued the remix EP Visions, which featured contributions from Blue, the Misfit, Mystery Skulls, Symbolyc, and several others. On her follow-up LP, 2017's Bad Baby, Jaffe continued to dial in on her bright synth pop- and electronic-oriented styles. A pair of 2019 EPs, This Is Better Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, took a more sultry, soulful approach.
