The music of Mexico had an undeniable pull on Celia Cruz, despite her heavy identification with her Cuban heritage, and the Fania compilation Viva Mexico: La Reina de la Canta a Mexico gathers a baker's dozen of songs with a Mexican origin. Included are a few songs by the most renowned Mexican songwriters, including José Alfredo Jiménez ("Te Solté la Rienda"), Armando Manzanero ("Esperaré"), and Agustín Lara ("El Coquero"). The recording dates range throughout the '60s and '70s, including her slick salsa albums from the '70s with Willie Colón as well as earthier Latin pop dates from the '60s. Lacking any of her biggest hits, the collection is definitely not recommended for those new to Celia Cruz, and the obtuseness of the theme makes for a marginal compilation at best.
