Este décimo álbum del cantautor canadiense es una obra elegante y teatral grabada junto al productor Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney, Elvis Costello, Crowded House) en Sound City, el legendario estudio de Los Ángeles donde Wainwright también había registrado su aclamado debut de 1998. Pese a la intención de Wainwright de presentar a Unfollow the Rules como un retorno a sus orígenes, el disco deja en evidencia su notable crecimiento artístico como compositor y arreglista en todos estos años, aumentado por sus recientes experiencias en el ámbito de la música clásica.
