¿Puede la música expresar la idea de un elemento tan natural como el agua? Claude Debussy se volcó con denuedo en el asunto, pero Alexandre Desplat ha optado por recursos diferentes, por más que, como en el caso del gran compositor francés, los timbres jueguen también una baza fundamental. En este cuento fantástico de Guillermo Del Toro, que narra la historia de amor entre una muchacha muda, Elisa (Sally Hawkins), y una criatura anfibia (Doug Jones), Desplat recurre a los servicios de doce flautistas venidos de la mítica London Symphony Orchestra –flautas alto, flautas bajo, flautas traveseras–. La partitura incluye muy pocos metales, confiando principalmente a las cuerdas y maderas la tarea de evocar las ondulaciones y fluideces propias del medio acuático. A eso hay que añadir la delicadeza instrumental del piano, el arpa y el vibráfono, que refuerzan tales impresiones. A partir de ese tejido orquestal poco común, Desplat introduce diferentes motivos y ambientes. Así, durante los títulos genéricos iniciales se escucha un silbido (ejecutado por el propio compositor) que representa la «voz» de la joven heroína. En cuanto al bandoneón (asociado a la criatura), es utilizado por su sensualidad y dulzura para acentuar la vertiente onírica de las imágenes. Estos dos instrumentos evolucionan elegantemente en paralelo, al igual que los dos protagonistas del film, héroes atípicos que parecen salidos de alguna antigua comedia musical hollywoodiense. Y es que al margen de su postulado dramático un tanto excéntrico, La forma del agua supone ante todo un homenaje al cine, y principalmente al gran cine clásico norteamericano. A lo largo de toda la película la banda sonora transmite sin cesar ese sentimiento de nostalgia, en particular mediante el uso de percusiones latinoamericanas (bongos, congas…) que recuerdan a las de muchos films de las décadas de 1950 y 1960 (entre otros Sed de mal, de Orson Welles, con score de Henry Mancini). Y en los genéricos finales, a manera del tema principal del film, Alexandre Desplat apuesta por el crossover, requiriendo a la soprano Renée Fleming, para ofrecer unos arreglos inéditos del clásico jazzístico de los 40 You’ll Never Know. Por último, cabe destacar que La forma del agua ha reportado a Desplat su segundo Oscar, tres años después de El Gran Hotel Budapest de Wes Anderson. ©Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
