Qué mejor manera de felicitar a John Lydon por el cuarenta aniversario de Public Image Ltd (PIL) que escuchando esta estupenda caja cargada de singles, rarezas y extractos de conciertos. A lo largo de 5CD, The Public Image Is Rotten (Songs From The Heart) reúne 74 temas: todos los singles de PIL publicados entre 1978 y 2015 (CD1), todas sus caras B, algunas rarezas y diversos cortes de sus sesiones radiofónicas para los programas de John Peel en 1979 y Mark Goodier en 1992 (CD2), maxis y remezclas dance (CD3), mixes y temas inéditos (CD4) y el concierto –hasta ahora nunca editado– celebrado en el Ritz de Nueva York el 16 de julio de 1989 (CD5)… Fundado un año antes del final de los Sex Pistols por un Johnny Rotten reconvertido en John Lydon, PIL sería un ovni dentro de la escena post-punk que, a partir de las cenizas de su antiguo grupo (y del fantástico single Public Image, que proyectó su legado al futuro), apostaría decididamente por la experimentación, como dejaba claro su segundo álbum, Metal Box. Una verdadera “caja metálica” cuyos temas se alejaban del característico muro de sonido guitarrero de los Pistols, y donde Lydon confeccionaba una larga, dolorosa y tensa suite new wave, de rítmicas marciales y groove asombrosamente gélido. Pautado por el bajo de Jah Wobble y atravesado por los riffs de Keith Levene, este revolucionario trabajo está en el origen del dub postpunk, del funk glacial y del rock de tonalidades más (f)rígidas. Durante los años PIL el ex-Pistol chillará como una bestia en celo y castigará los oídos de su audiencia mediante procedimientos diferentes a los de Never Mind the Bollocks, sirviéndose como modelos de grupos krautrock como Neu! y Can y anunciando por lo demás ese punk-funk tan recurrente en años posteriores. Tras la marcha de Wobble (1981) y Levene (1984), PIL se encaminará por senderos menos vanguardistas pero no necesariamente más placenteros.
