Van Morrison nunca dejó de grabar durante los noventa, pero no parecía sentirse cómodo en su rol de compositor. En ese sentido, desde su mismo título The Healing Game (1997) sugiere un rejuvenecimiento y una cura, la de haber redescubierto la alegría de hacer música. Si bien las canciones no son muy diferentes a las que venía haciendo, la usual mezcla de baladas, blues, folk-rock y R&B aparece ahora imbuida de un vigor, una calidez y un sosiego ausente en los discos precedentes. Se destaca además el aporte del pianista Georgie Fame, quien se convertiría en un colaborador indispensable de Morrison durante las siguientes dos décadas.
