Tras las locuras y geniales experimentos de Revolver y Sergent Pepper's los Beatles se vuelcan en la composición pura y dura, en busca de cierta sobriedad y dejando al margen sus recientes excesos psicodélicos, por magníficos que fueran. Editado en noviembre de 1968, el doble White Album supone una vuelta a un pop-rock más desnudo, en búsqueda de lo esencial. Una sensación amplificada por el título epónimo del disco, The Beatles, que no logra ocultar que las disensiones entre los cuatro músicos son cada vez más evidentes. Cuatro músicos con cuatro personalidades musicales que dejan entrever sus diferencias creativas, como anuncio del principio del fin de la banda y de las futuras trayectorias en solitario de cada uno… Pero a pesar del eclecticismo dominante, los Beatles vuelven a confeccionar una propuesta del todo única, un recorrido donde cada canción equivale a una etapa de su particular viaje musical.
