Con intención de recuperar el aura legendaria de su primer álbum, Nas volvía a centrarse en lo esencial. Irritado en aquel momento por el éxito y arrogancia de su rival Jay-Z, regresa con una fórmula más agresiva y concisa que no deja nada al azar. Desde los primeros compases de Stillmatic, en “Ether”, Nas se dedica a castigar a Jay-Z y a llamar a la lucha contra él. Pero además versionea el tema genérico de la serie Los Soprano en la eficaz “Got Ur Self A Gun”, su mejor mezcla de rap puro y duro y de crossover comercial desde “The Message”. Y también recurre a su mentor Large Professor en dos obras maestras de su discografía, “Rewind” y “You’re Da Man”, en las que Nasir juega la baza de la introspección y la más sincera honestidad, mostrándose más fuerte y al mismo tiempo más vulnerable que nunca. Y en la estupenda “One mic” explica el sentido de sus composiciones y del contexto real que subyace en sus letras, a manera de soliloquio salvífico. E incluso invita a AZ en “The Flyest” para plasmar un estupendo dúo que parece directamente salido de la época de “Life’s A Bitch”. De este modo, ofreciendo justo lo que se esperaba de él, Nas entrega la banda sonora más ilustrativa de su mundo interior y de la furia que lo recorre. Y deja finalmente atrás las especulaciones megalómanas de Iam y, sobre todo, de Nastradamus, renovando su imagen de superhéroe de un rap reducido a lo esencial y con alto contenido ético. © Aurélien Chapuis/ Qobuz
