Bobo Stenson is perhaps ECM’s most natural pianist, and is a pillar of the Munich-based label that has been his home since 1971. The Swede has always made his trio a kind of moving, sensual body; a splendid vehicle for improvised music that blurs the boundaries between jazz and classical. This ode to intimacy is possible thanks to the close rapport that Stenson maintains with his rhythm team, made up of bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Fält. Released the year of his 78th birthday, Sphere doesn’t all of a sudden seek to reinvent the language of the Bob Stenson Trio; it refines and enhances it. It underlines its beauty as well as its obviousness. A record like this in 2023 is a real protest against trends. Bobo Stenson's piano, braced by the everblowing currents of classic jazz, becomes weightless. Fält plays his drums with a velvet touch. Jormin is all about punctuation, no meandering speeches. The language spoken by these three comes just as much from the Swedish classical composer Sven-Erik Bäck as it does from Jormin, who wrote two melodies and arranged two of the others, but above all, it is unique, redeeming, and it feels good. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
