King Krule was born in Peckham, London. In 2020, he took up residence in Liverpool, travelling back and forth between the two cities. From these often-nocturnal journeys, and somewhat hybrid spaces which constantly fluctuate, he has extracted his fifth career album, Space Heavy. At 28, he is no longer quite the kid who sang Easy Easy in 2013. He has been through some difficult times, and his actions were often called into question. Today, he is a new man and artist who places the guitar at the centre of his creative process, like a return to basics.
It sounds damn good. King Krule knows how to combine his raw side, the noise of microphones, amps, imperfections, spitting basses, with orchestrations of discreet strings, tinged with emotional complexity. He goes through forward-facing rock infused with jazz, crazy New York style saxophone (on Pink Shell for example), to delightful ballads such as Our Vacuum and If Only It Was Warmth. The musician has recently decided to return to live in London. He says he no longer recognises his native neighbourhood and has trouble finding his way around. But perhaps it is also him who has changed, both in a human and artistic sense. In any case, Space Heavy certainly makes us think so. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
