Biographical material in the classical field tends to have an enervating quality, with endless lists of degrees and prizes that mean little except to other musicians. Baritone Will Liverman goes in a definitively opposite direction with this double album song recital exploring music and musicians that have shaped his own work. The pieces are all by female composers, mostly but not exclusively African American, but the performers, in addition to Liverman himself, are a mixed bag that includes the famed Renée Fleming (a mentor to Liverman), who appears on Sarah Kirkland Snider's haunting song Everything That Ever Was. Another member of the cast of characters is Terry Liverman, whom Will joins on piano. Even physical album buyers are encouraged to check out online versions of the album, which include spoken "show me the way" statements from some of the performers; these include not only Fleming but violinist Lady Jess, who has toured with Beyoncé. The composers are less directly connected to Liverman, but they make up an interesting mixture of music from the past (Florence Beatrice Price, Margaret Bonds, Amy Beach) and the present day. Listeners will discover some new music here, and it is all tied together by a personal perspective, something that is so often missing from the contemporary classical scene.
