The program of this live release by the London Symphony Orchestra String Ensemble is intriguing, with both the works starting life as string quartets. The Shostakovich Chamber Symphony in C minor was originally his String Quartet No. 8, written in 1960 after a visit to still-devastated Dresden. It is one of the most agonized works in the entire Shostakovich catalog, and it is probably more popular in Rudolf Barshai's orchestration; even though the notes are the same, the string orchestra version brings a bit of distance to the hammer strokes of the fourth movement (sample track eight) and the brooding repetition of Shostakovich's musical initials D-S-C-H (D, D, E flat [Es], C, B natural). Gustav Mahler's arrangement of Schubert's String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810 ("Death and the Maiden"), is less common. Mahler made it in 1896 but either left it incomplete or didn't hang on to the finished version, and the work was reconstructed from sketches found by Mahler's daughter Anna and published in 1984. It's not quite clear how it's supposed to sound; Mahler might have had a full orchestral string section in mind rather than the 24 players of the LSO String Ensemble, who sound a little thin in the brittle acoustic of the Barbican hall. But violinist-leader Roman Simovic keeps things moving and catches the inward quality of these death-haunted works. Recommended for Mahler fans, although there are cleaner readings of the Shostakovich about.
