Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet has had a significant career in European opera houses, but she has been little-known in the United States. Her 2011 solo album debut, an outstanding recording of three song cycles, ought to change that, though, and bring her to the attention of a broader public. She sings with a tone that is sweet, full, focused, and brightly colorful. Her intonation and technique are irreproachable. Her voice is absolutely solid, from the depths that Berlioz requires to a lyrically soaring top. And she fully inhabits the songs with strongly personalized conviction. Gillet may be the first non-native English speaker to record Knoxville: Summer of 1915, a quintessentially American work, but her slight French accent isn't a distraction because her performance is so compelling, and it in fact contributes to the innocence of her characterization, which comes across without any hint of artifice. Paul Daniel, leading Orchestra Philharmonique Royal de Liège, gets off to a stiff, metronomic start, but quickly settles into an exceptionally nuanced and shapely flow that suits the music beautifully. As fine as Gillet is in the Barber, she's even more effective in Les nuits d’été and Les Illuminations. The Berlioz is an expressive tour de force, and Gillet captures its expansive emotions with assurance and tonal luminosity. At the opening of Les Illuminations, when Gillet ferociously asserts "Jai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage" (I alone have the key to this wild parade) you can't help believing her, and the gentle resignation of its close, "Départ" is meltingly tender. The orchestra's playing is absolutely stellar throughout, with a sound that's sumptuous yet crisply precise, and that's bursting with character. The "Fanfare" of the Britten comes across with a boldly feral strangeness. The colors Daniel draws from the orchestra at the close of Berlioz's "Au cimitière -- Clair de lune" are celestially mysterious. The sound of Aeon's CD is clean, immediate, and warmly resonant. Highly recommended.
