When we think of Bill Evans, we tend to think of his trio, or indeed solo, albums. However, at points along his gargantuan discography, the American pianist has sometimes taken some surprising turns. A good example of this was recorded in May of 1976, in the Fantasy studios in Berkeley, California, where he recorded Quintessence with saxophonist Harold Land, guitarist Kenny Burrell, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Philly Joe Jones, the only artist from this short-lived formation with whom he had previously worked, notably on Interplay, a work in quintet which had been released fourteen years earlier. Here, Evans' piano, naturally enough, leaves behind its usual fascinating structures and speaks a language that is sometimes utterly unique. For example, when he plays with an Oscar Peterson-style swing on Second Time Around (the only trio track on Quintessence), no doubt inspired by the presence of Ray Brown, who was the Canadian pianist's regular bassist between 1951 and 1966. Kenny Burrell's interventions are rather subtle (even if we don't find here the quasi-telepathic complicity that Bill Evans had with Jim Hall); Harold Land's are discreet but tasteful; in short, the whole gives off a feeling of refinement that sometimes restrains the protagonists' improvisations. But while Quintessence is not a key part of Evans' huge discography, it remains a superb record, with a remarkable sound recording, as this 24Bit Hi-Res edition shows off. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
