Un regreso espectacular al formato de la era de Violator, Playing the Angel de 2005 es posiblemente la mejor obra de Depeche Mode desde aquel aclamado álbum de 1990. Está claro que el grupo va muy en serio, ya que su primer tema, "A Pain That I'm Used To", abre con un ruido discordante y de mal augurio que cambia a un tono sombrío y emergente. Sin embargo, el lado más melódico de DM está bien representado, como se revela en la canción con tintes de gospel "John the Revelator" y la emotiva y apremiante "Precious". El resultado de un grupo de larga trayectoria que se concentra en lo que mejor sabe hacer, sin parecer repetitivo o cohibido, Playing the Angel es una adición bien recibida a los mejores discos de Depeche Mode.
