A diferencia del ruidoso petardeo de su primer single "Get on Your Boots", No Line on the Horizon no es un estridente devaneo electrónico como Pop. A excepción de una sección central un tanto acartonada, No Line on the Horizon presenta unos austeros tonos grisáceos y una meditación a medio tempo. Es un disco que añora ser íntimo pero U2 no se dedican a la intimidad, sólo se dedican a ser majestuosos. De vez en cuando, U2 ataca con esa inconfundible mezcla de sonidos inmensos y un sentimiento cálido e inmutable que ha sido su sello característico, convirtiendo lo íntimo en algo inquietantemente universal, con una grandeza aparentemente natural. Por desgracia, gran parte del álbum muestra lo difícil que es sonar tan magníficamente a medida que se vuelve más sosegado y sin enfoque, las ideas desvaneciéndose en vez de cuajándose.
