New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War de Erykah Badu es incluso más experimental y musicalmente diverso que el EP de 2003, Worldwide Underground, con Badu y sus colaboradores manteniendo el relajado estilo soul-jazz con influencias de jam del EP y añadiendo ritmos hip-hop de vanguardia. Líricamente el álbum es tan políticamente cargado y downbeat como el título y el subtítulo sugieren, con canciones dedicadas a la Nación del Islam, las consecuencias del huracán Katrina, el abuso de las drogas y los fallos del gobierno, solamente con las positivas "The Healer", "Telephone" (un conmovedor tributo al difunto productor J Dilla), y el primer sencillo de carácter dulce, "Honey", dando un cierto respiro ante tanta oscuridad.
