Although a strong seller, Mothers & Daughters is actually among Rosemary Clooney's weakest of her productive Concord period. Tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton is missing, the selections (some of which deal with children) are often overly sentimental and the jazz content (despite some brief spots for the reeds of Gary Foster) is nearly nonexistent; the occasional string section does not help. Clooney is in reasonably good voice (she was 68 at the time) and it is good to have the classic "Sisters" (from Holiday Inn) on record but some of the numbers (particularly a vocal duet with Keith Carradine on "Turn Around") are so sticky as to be difficult to sit through and it is strange to have the meaning of "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" (which is associated with Maurice Chevalier) totally changed. Pass on this one!
