What little is known of Pietro Migali’s life has been deduced from his will, which gives us his likely dates and some biographical information, as well as from his only extant publication, the Trio Sonatas, Op. 1. Probably born around 1635 and deceased after the will's date of 1715, Migali was a native of the southern Italian city of Lecce, though his musical education is thought to have taken him to Naples or Rome. His role as Maestro di Capella is known from the sonatas' title page, though there is no other information about his career or other works. Yet the high quality of his compositions is evident from this 2017 release by Ensemble BariAntiquA, and judging from the inventiveness of his music, Migali must have mastered his craft through other compositions and assiduous study. The influence of Arcangelo Corelli is notable in the violin parts, and the sonatas follow the four-movement form of the sonata da camera, which Corelli popularized. But Migali may have been influenced by Carlo Mannelli, a Roman violinist and composer whose trio sonatas of 1682 appear to have influenced Migali's bowing indications and other features. With all the mystery surrounding Migali's life and music, one might expect his music to be arcane and uninteresting, though the opposite is true. The ingenious counterpoint and the rich variety of the parts reveal Migali to have been a master of musical repartee, and the expressiveness of the sonatas shows sensitive musicianship that could only have come from experience. Ensemble BariAntiquA delivers energetic and elegant readings of the full set of 12 sonatas, and the sound of the recording is clear and crisply detailed, even in the rather resonant acoustics of Monopoli Cathedral in Bari.
