Este sólido álbum-concepto de Dio lanzado en el 2000 hubiera sido recibido mucho más efusivamente unos 15 o 20 años más atrás, pero a fin de cuentas un buen disco es un buen disco. Musicalmente superior al precedente Angry Machines, Magica señala un retorno al oscuro misticismo de sus primeros trabajos y de su época con Rainbow y Black Sabbath. Otro factor importante es la excelente banda de apoyo liderada por Craig Goldy, el mejor guitarrista de Dio después de Vivian Campbell. La voz de Dio suena particularmente inspirada y con más texturas de lo habitual a lo largo de una historia claramente inspirada por las novelas de Tolkien.
