La falta de experiencia del grupo, que aún no está en la cima musical, se compensa con su potencia cruda. Las canciones de Boy están repletas de angustia y rebelión adolescente, resultado de influencias de grupos de punk como The Virgin Prunes. A pesar de la aspereza de este álbum, su simplicidad y franqueza resultan muy atractivas. Incluyendo a "I Will Follow" y "Out of Control", este álbum es un buen ejemplo del primer trabajo de U2; hasta ahora el grupo no ha sido capaz de igualar la energía pura de Boy.
