Jakub Józef Orliński no longer requires any introduction. Unknowingly filmed during a live radio broadcast from the 2017 Aix-en-Provence Festival, the Polish countertenor unwittingly created a stir by singing Vivaldi in shorts and sneakers. The magic of social networks did the rest, and now his video is close to eight million views on YouTube. The professional rise of the singer, a breakdancer in his spare time, is like his personality: improbable and spontaneous. But a break like that, however much good it might do from a marketing point of view, would not have created lasting success if it had lacked the essential ingredient: talent. And Orliński is not short on talent.
"Anima æterna', his third solo album, is conceived as a 'parallel journey' to 'Anima sacra', his first album, and features a focus on the Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745), with works by Fux, Antonio de Almeida and Handel. Note also two excerpts from the Davide trionfante Bartolomeo Nucci's Laudate pueri by Gerardo Manna, both world firsts.
As always with Orliński, it's beautiful, it's pure, it's brilliant, and the singer forms a perfect tandem with conductor Francesco Corti who leads the Il Pomo d'Oro ensemble here. From the slow and heart-rending aria ''Non t'amo per il ciel'' by Johann Joseph Fux to the triumphant ''Un giusto furore che m'arde nel core'' by Nucci, we are delighted to rediscover these rare gems of the repertoire, raised up sublimely by this counter-tenor's subtle timbres. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
