Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 3 in E major is among the most commonly performed piano concertos of the 20th century, and the Concerto for the Left Hand of Ravel is not far behind. These two pieces work well together in a program, and listeners will find strong performances of both here from pianist Andreas Haefliger: the Bartók is gentle and lyrical, with a fine sense of the limpid slow movement, written by the composer as a hymn to the restorative natural world of Saranac Lake, New York. The Ravel has the requisite ringing tones that make one forget one is listening to just one hand on the piano. The real news here is a new work, the Piano Concerto "Gran Toccata" of Dieter Ammann, which Haefliger commissioned for the project sight unseen. The work had its premiere at the Proms in London in 2019 and has been performed several times since then with the present forces, the Helsinki Philharmonic under Susanna Mälkki. It has a confident, lived-in quality, but the best thing is that, even though Haefliger did not necessarily start out intending to make this happen, Ammann's concerto falls convincingly into the traditions represented by Ravel, especially in the jazz inflections of the opening movement, and Bartók in the pulsing rhythms. In a way, Ammann manages a 21st century update of the grand traditions of the last century, reflecting the influence of minimalism and proposing ways of tying it to earlier music. This is an unusually cohesive and satisfying set of piano concertos.
