Existen varias versiones de Acis and Galatea de Handel (incluso una remodelada por Mozart) que forman por tanto un cierto embrollo en el que podría perderse el melómano. Intentaremos aclarar un poco las cosas: Handel, en una carta, describe la primera versión de la obra, en un acto y cantada en inglés, como una «pequeña ópera» que tiene la forma de una mascarada, y así se representó por primera vez en 1718. En 1732, el compositor modificó y amplió su partitura para convertirla en una serenata en tres actos, cantada en italiano. La presente versión, realizada en 1739, es la última refundición –restituida en inglés– en dos actos. La versión de 1718 es fruto de la primera exploración del mundo lírico en lengua inglesa por Handel, que se dejó influenciar en buena medida por Pepusch e incluso (y mucho) por Purcell, cuyas obras, veinte años tras su muerte, seguían deleitando a los melómanos y a ¡los sucesores! del compositor. El tratamiento rítmico, el mundo melódico y la instrumentación subrayan el aspecto pastoral del tema y destacan la genialidad de Handel en el momento de crear, a partir de sus libretos, las atmósferas idóneas para destilar una música finísima. Los cinco solistas de la grabación forman la flor y nata de las voces barrocas inglesas actuales, y cuatro de los cuales son o fueron miembros de The Sixteen, el excelente conjunto vocal –y en este caso también instrumental– británico que los acompañan; todos ellos bajo la dirección alerta y fina de su director musical y fundador, Harry Christophers. © SM/Qobuz
