Les Wedding Present ne sont probablement pas un groupe aussi “Indie » qu’ils en ont l’air ! Formé à Leeds en 1985 par David Gedge, ils partagent un étonnant record avec… Elvis Presley ! Celui du plus grand nombre de singles classés dans le Top 40 britannique en un an, après avoir sorti un titre par mois en 1992. L’ensemble constituera ensuite l’album judicieusement nommé « Hit Parade ». Nourri à la musique de The Fall, Buzzcocks et Gang of Four, les Wedding Present ont connu une période dorée pendant les dix premières années de leur existence, signant même sur le label RCA pour la sortie de leurs mythiques albums « Bizarro » et « Seamonsters » à l’orée des années 90. Et bien que seul David Gedge reste à la tête du navire aujourd’hui, accompagné d’un groupe changeant au fil de ses très nombreuses tournées, les Wedding Present (et leur jumeau pop et orchestral Cinerama) ont su garder un esprit DIY et une identité à part sur la scène alternative britannique, celle des vrais artisans de la musique.
