Des débuts pris entre hard bop et cool, une fin s'ouvrant vers le free et le jazz fusion, la décennie 60 est marquée par de nombreuses (r)évolutions sur la planète jazz. Des expérimentations en tous genres qui amplifient une quête de liberté incessante. Des années 60 également synonymes de l'avènement de deux génies: Miles Davis et John Coltrane.

Il était une fois Blue Note en 10 albums

Le plus célèbre des labels de jazz avait tout bon ! Artistes cinq étoiles, répertoires originaux, directeurs artistiques associés ingénieux, prise de son d’exception, sublime esthétique des pochettes, éclectisme des genres (be-bop, hard bop, soul jazz, jazz modal, free), rien ne manquait à l’appel des enregistrements de l’écurie lancée en 1939 par Francis Wolff et Alfred Lion, deux Allemands ayant fui le régime nazi. Dans cet ample catalogue, Qobuz a choisi 10 albums clés. Certains sont des classiques célébrés. D’autres, des merveilles sous-estimées. Mais tous sont des incontournables ayant façonné l’esthétique Blue Note.

McCoy Tyner – The Real McCoy (1967)
Pour son entrée chez Blue Note, McCoy Tyner frappe fort. Et des deux poings ! Avec déjà six albums personnels sous le coude, le pianiste de Philadelphie se décide à quitter le quartet de John Coltrane. Pour enregistrer ce disque, le 21 avril 1967, il s’entoure de trois épées : Joe Henderson, Ron Carter et Elvin Jones. The Real McCoy est surtout un train lancé à 2 000 à l’heure. Une embardée de jazz sans concession commerciale, ni enluminures gratuites. A 29 ans, McCoy semble en cavale et dévale la pente sans que rien ne puisse l’arrêter. Ses complices, solidement à ses côtés, tiennent non seulement la cadence mais sont, eux aussi, comme galvanisés par la fougue de leur patron d’un jour. On imagine Alfred Lion, scotché derrière sa console, plaqué au fond de son fauteuil par tant de vitalité, par ce piano percussif mais intelligent et dont les improvisations restent parmi les plus impressionnantes du jazz de son temps.

Andrew Hill – Point of Departure (1965)
Andrew Hill n’a jamais été le pianiste le plus médiatisé de l’histoire du jazz. Il n’en demeure pas moins un acteur essentiel mais surtout original. Sommet de la discographie de ce natif de Chicago, une session Blue Note captée le 21 mars 1964 qui rend parfaitement compte de son style, de ses prises de risque et de sa faculté à communiquer avec ses complices. Les complices en question sont ici Kenny Dorham à la trompette, Eric Dolphy au saxophone alto, à la clarinette basse et à la flûte, Joe Henderson au saxophone ténor et à la flûte, Richard Davis à la contrebasse et Tony Williams à la batterie. Comme en avance sur son temps, le jazz qui brille tout au long des cinq thèmes, complexes et beaux, ne se repose jamais sur les lauriers d’un swing facile et rassurant ou d’un hard bop à papa. Le feu d’artifice est total. Dans l’écriture des pièces de ce quatrième album pour l’écurie d’Alfred Lion et Francis Wolff, dans les solos, dans les échanges. Plus d’un demi-siècle après son enregistrement, Point of Departure est un appel d’air assez avant-gardiste. Le défrichage (flagrant sur Departure qui conclut le disque) de nouveaux territoires encore plus approfondis l’année suivante sur Compulsion!!!!! qu’Andrew Hill publiera également sur Blue Note.

Horace Silver – Song for My Father (1965)
Au chapitre Horace Silver, le grand livre d’or du jazz a toujours aimé retenir principalement Song for My Father, un bel hommage rendu à son père photographié sur la pochette du disque. Le grand pianiste influencé par le blues, le gospel et le rhythm’n’blues livre dans cette musique enregistrée lors de trois séances (octobre 1963, janvier 1964 et octobre 1964) un jazz d’essence funky, blues et même bossa. Logique puisque c’est au retour d’un voyage au Brésil qu’il entamera ce projet. Horace Silver adosse ici son style contre de solides rythmiques, élément clé de son art, qui donnent à cette merveille un groove des plus précurseurs. Son piano, physique à souhait, embarque la musique dans le torrent d’un swing redoutable. Et dans les instants plus en retenue (Calcutta Cutie), Silver devient félin, agissant avec subtilité. Song for My Father aligne surtout les compositions mythiques, des mélodies accrocheuses qui influenceront des hordes de musiciens. Dans une interview accordée à NPR en 2008, le contrebassiste Christian McBride expliqua les raisons de sa vénération pour cette musique. « La musique d’Horace Silver a toujours représenté ce que prêchent les musiciens de jazz mais ne pratiquent pas forcément : la simplicité. Ça reste gravé dans la mémoire, c’est facile à chanter. Ça rentre facilement dans votre sang. C’est aisément compréhensible. Et c’est très enraciné et gorgé de soul. »



Eric Dolphy – Out to Lunch! (1964)
Le 25 février 1964, Eric Dolphy signe sa seule séance pour Blue Note en tant que leader mais aussi une quarantaine de minutes propulsant le jazz sur des sentiers avant-gardistes inédits ; les prémisses du free en quelque sorte… Avec sa clarinette basse, sa flûte et son saxophone alto, le musicien secoue le hard bop alors régnant, aidé dans son entreprise de déstabilisation par le trompettiste Freddie Hubbard, le vibraphoniste Bobby Hutcherson, le contrebassiste Richard Davis et le batteur Tony Williams qui n’a que 18 ans ! Les motivations de Dolphy sont on ne peut plus claires sur Straight Up and Down, thème bien imbibé, pour ne pas dire carrément vacillant. Comme sur Hat and Beard, un clin d’œil à Thelonious Monk, lancé lui aussi dans un grand ravalement de façade du genre… Le public est alors peu habitué à l’esthétique souvent atonale du souffleur comme à ses changements de rythme inattendus. Mais Eric Dolphy n’est jamais un poseur cérébral juste là pour choquer la galerie. Et aucune seconde d’Out to Lunch! n’est gratuite. Quatre mois après cette session, son auteur mourra d’une crise cardiaque, à seulement 36 ans…

Lee Morgan – Search for a New Land (1966)
Durant l’été 1964, Lee Morgan publie The Sidewinder, l’une des plus grosses ventes de l’histoire de Blue Note. Cinq mois avant ce must de pur hard bop mâtiné de soul, le trompettiste avait mis en boîte une session bien plus osée et avant-gardiste que le label gardera dans ses tiroirs jusqu’en juillet 1966. Sous le nom Search for the New Land, Morgan se lançait dans des compositions aventureuses. Ne serait-ce que sur le long thème – de plus de quinze minutes – qui donne son titre à l‘album, il étire les canons du hard bop et propose une trame narrative plus abstraite et plus riche. Pour colorer davantage son affaire, il laisse agir ses cinq complices (le saxophoniste Wayne Shorter, le pianiste Herbie Hancock, le guitariste Grant Green, le contrebassiste Reggie Workman et le batteur Billy Higgins) qui s’en donnent à cœur joie. Une merveille.
