À l’occasion de la sortie du biopic qui lui est consacré (“Rocketman” de Dexter Fletcher), retour sur les années 1970 d’un artiste généreux.

C’est véritablement grâce au « triptyque hérouvillois » qu’Elton John devient une star internationale, en particulier grâce à son ultime volet : Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973). Célébré à la fois par la critique et le public, ce double album génial se vendra à 30 millions d’exemplaires à travers le monde. Il débute par un morceau de rock progressif épique de plus de 11 minutes (Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding), dans lequel le piano d’Elton John, les synthés de David Hentschel et la guitare de Davey Johnstone sont censés interpréter la bande-son des propres funérailles du chanteur. Dans un style plus sobre, on trouve dans cet album la première version de Candle in the Wind, une ballade sur Marilyn Monroe (et plus généralement sur le thème de l’existence éphémère). On aura compris que c’est la mort qui hante cet album, malgré l’énergie vitale débordante qui l’anime. Mais de quelle mort parle-t-on ? Probablement celle de l’existence passée d’Elton John, lequel se libère définitivement de sa jeunesse en noir et blanc afin d’accéder au paradis coloré (mais artificiel ?) qui caractérise sa vie artistique dans cette première moitié des années 70. La référence au film Le Magicien d’Oz dans le morceau Goodbye Yellow Brick Road est très parlante à cet égard (sans parler de l’imagerie gay accolée à ce long-métrage).

Peu après le relativement oubliable Caribou (1974) sort Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975), autobiographie musicale dans laquelle Elton John (Captain Fantastic) et Bernie Taupin (The Brown Dirt Cowboy) se remémorent leurs débuts difficiles à Londres, de 1967 à 1969. Cet opus comprend notamment Someone Saved my Life Tonight, qui raconte les fiançailles désastreuses d’Elton John avec Linda Woodrow et sa tentative de suicide en 1968. Le « Someone » du titre se réfère au chanteur de blues Long John Baldry, qui le convainquit de rompre avec la jeune femme plutôt que de gâcher sa vie artistique et sentimentale à cause d’un mariage raté. Toujours en 1975, Elton John sort son dixième album, intitulé Rock of the Westies, dans lequel figure notamment le single Island Girl, ainsi qu’un fameux duo avec la chanteuse anglaise Kiki Dee, Don’t Go Breaking my Heart, hommage sémillant aux duos mythiques de la Motown.

Puis arrive en 1976 le double album Blue Moves, dont la plage 6 est un hommage à Édith Piaf (Cage the Songbird). Après Marilyn Monroe et avant Lady Di, on notera la prédilection d’Elton John pour la célébration – voire la fétichisation – de certaines figures féminines charismatiques. En 1978 survient une minirévolution dans la mécanique bien huilée de l’infatigable fabricant de chansons, puisque ni le parolier Bernie Taupin, ni le producteur Gus Dudgeon ne figurent dans les crédits de A Single Man. Ils sont remplacés respectivement par Gary Osborne et… Elton John lui-même, qui coproduit cet opus avec ses musiciens. Parmi les autres curiosités de l’album, citons la présence singulière des joueurs du Watford Football Club dans Big Dipper et le gospel Georgia, ainsi que le choix d’une tonalité exceptionnellement basse pour Elton John dans certains morceaux. La décennie s’achève avec Victim of Love en 1979, album d’inspiration disco qui ne convainc ni les critiques, ni le public, ni Elton John lui-même (lequel est d’ailleurs relégué au rang d’interprète, et toujours sans le secours de Bernie Taupin pour les paroles). Les années 1970 se terminent donc dans une solitude artistique flagrante, écho à l'isolement de l’homme. Cet album annonce également la carrière en dents de scie du chanteur britannique à partir de cette date. Cependant, il se relèvera progressivement du chaos personnel dans lequel il était plongé (rédemption symbolisée par I’m Still Standing sur Too Low for Zero en 1983). Enfin, il deviendra un défenseur actif et courageux des droits LGBT, et fera de la lutte contre le sida l’un de ses chevaux de bataille. Du militant ou de l’artiste, quel rôle marquera le plus la seconde partie de la carrière d’Elton John ? Cela reste à voir, avec ou sans lunettes colorées.
