Dès l’âge de 10 ans pour être précis, lorsque le jeune Steveland Judkins qui voit le jour le 13 mai 1950 est présenté par Ronnie White des Miracles de Smokey Robinson au charismatique patron de Motown, Berry Gordy. Un premier hit trois ans plus tard (Fingertips Pt.2), l’enfant star aveugle est un bosseur né, malheureusement prisonnier d’un contrat on ne peut plus contraignant, concocté comme à l’accoutumée par un Gordy calculateur. Stevie est LE phénomène de foire du patron de Motown, alignant les disques d’or grâce à un savant mélange de soul, R&B et pop. Il faudra attendre 1970 pour entendre sa première production personnelle aux racines rhythm’n’blues avec Signed, Sealed And Delivered. Le jour de ses 21 ans, le 13 mai 1971, celui qui fut le gentil Little Stevie de Saginaw dans le Michigan saisit sa liberté artistique à bras le corps pour livrer à Gordy la musique dont il rêve nuit et jour. Socialement et politiquement engagé, musicalement à la pointe des nouvelles technologies, le Stevie Wonder nouveau enregistrera quatre albums essentiels slalomant entre soul, funk, rock, R&B et pop avec beaucoup d’originalité : Music Of My Mind (1972), Talking Book (1972), Innervisions (1973) et Fulfillingness’ First Finale (1974). Épaulé par l’ingénieur du son Robert Margouleff et le co-producteur Malcolm Cecil, Stevie explore durant trois ans les capacités de synthétiseurs alors en vogue (Moog, Arp, Clavinet) et les diverses techniques d’overdub. Multi-instrumentiste exceptionnel, il est impressionné par le concept musical et idéologique de la Family de Sly Stone et ne cesse de se passer en boucle What’s Going On de Marvin Gaye, son co-locataire Motown. Cet âge d’or, Stevie Wonder ne le retrouvera par la suite que partiellement, exception faite du brillant Songs In The Key Of Life (1976). Mais ces quatre chefs d’œuvre de la période 1972/1974 suffisent pourtant à livrer des perles funk originales : Superstition, Boogie On Reggae Woman ou Higher Ground. Ils influenceront surtout des hordes de musiciens aux quatre coins du monde. Et pas seulement dans la sphère du groove. Car toujours très attachée aux structures mélodiques et harmoniques propres à la pop, la musique de Stevie Wonder s’avère au final une soul totalement unique, qui ne sonne comme aucune autre. © MZ

Stevie Wonder, les 5 années qui ont tout changé

Entre 1972 et 1976, le tout jeune Stevie Wonder (qui soufflera 70 bougies le 13 mai) enregistre cinq albums qui marqueront l’histoire du label Motown mais aussi de la pop et de la soul music. Un nirvana musical et technologique toujours aussi influent.

Une longue parenthèse s’ouvre alors pour Stevie Wonder avant de boucler cet âge d’or avec Songs in the Key of Life, qui paraît le 28 septembre 1976. Après Fulfillingness' First Finale, son statut de star ne l’empêche pas d’être de plus en plus dégoûté par la politique du gouvernement. Il évoque même un exil au Ghana pour s’occuper d’enfants handicapés. Et la rumeur parle carrément d’un concert d’adieu. Mais le 5 août 1975, il signe un nouveau contrat mirobolant de 37 millions de dollars avec Motown et décide de mettre en chantier une œuvre totale. Cloîtré durant deux ans, il atteint avec ce double album (accompagné d’un EP) un nouveau pinacle de fusion entre soul noire et pop blanche. Enregistré dans les studios Crystal Sound et Record Plant d’Hollywood et à la Hit Factory de New York, et impliquant plus de 130 musiciens et techniciens, Songs in the Key of Life a été conçu sans Margouleff et Cecil. Le tandem a quitté le navire durant les dernières séances de Fulfillingness' First Finale, exténué et agacé par l’entourage bruyant de la star en studio.



Au cœur d’un genre qu’il a créé seul, le génie de Stevie Wonder déploie sa poésie unique gorgée d’harmonies d’un bout à l’autre de ces Songs in the Key of Life. Ces chansons renferment sophistication de plume, union des genres, qu’ils soient soul, funk, reggae, jazz (il rend ouvertement hommage à Ellington sur le bien nommé Sir Duke), rock ou même classique, expérimentations instrumentales et éclectisme des thèmes abordés, légers, caustiques (All Day Sucker) ou graves (Black Man, Village Ghetto Land). Un arc-en-ciel de saveurs, une symphonie de tubes éclectiques, qui servira plus tard à de nombreux rappeurs (en 1995, Coolio transformera Pastime Paradise en Gangsta's Paradise). Contrairement aux quatre précédents opus, Stevie est ici solidement entouré et on croise à ses côtés des grands noms du jazz comme le pianiste Herbie Hancock, le guitariste George Benson, la flûtiste Bobbi Humphrey ou la harpiste Dorothy Ashby. Avec cet album, il a surtout accouché d’une œuvre qui influencera la musique des années à venir, de Prince à Michael Jackson. En à peine plus de deux ans, Stevie Wonder aura surtout abattu une quinte flush de disques essentiels. Ballade romantique, pop song mélodique ou funk furieux. Gospel, soul ou pop. Divorce, religion ou politique intérieure. Rarement un artiste aura fusionné autant d’idées, de sons, d’atmosphères, d’instruments et de mots sur une aussi courte période. Et même quand il aborde des sujets sombres et met le doigt là où ça fait mal, il laisse toujours entrevoir une petite lumière d’optimisme au bout du tunnel. Encore une histoire de vision sans doute…
